Today I tried to install a Wordpress plugin that was compatible with WP version 2.8, and I couldn’t get it activated. It said the module didn’t contain a valid header. After some searching and testing, I found that it had to do with the difference in version between my site (WP 2.8.4) and the ‘Tested up to’ version indicated in the readme.txt file of the plugin (WP 2.8). After changing the value in the readme.txt file to 2.8.4, it worked like a charm.
This is no problem when you install a plugin from the Wordpress plugin library, using the automatic install functionality, because it warns you there might be a problem, and you can choose to install nevertheless. But when you download the plugin to your computer, and then do the installation from there, the problem may occur.
Of course, we’ll try to keep our widget always up-to-date with the latest WP releases, but if for some reason we are late, and you don’t want to wait, then this is an option.
So if you encounter this problem, first of all you should check on this site if there is a newer version of the widget. And if you have the latest version, then you should unzip it, check out the first lines of the readme.txt file, and if necessary change version on the ‘Tested up to’ line to the WP version you’re using.
Of course, it would mean using a widget that hasn’t been tested for that version of WP, so the risk is yours.
