I know you’ve all been waiting for version 1.3, but something came up suddenly last week, and this version release is the result.
This new version of the free flash slideshow wordpress widget is again the result of the feedback of one of you. So don’t hesitate and post your praise, questions, comments and critics. It all helps to make a better product!
So, what’s new? Version 1.2.2 resolves a problem that occurred on at least some sites that are hosted with GoDaddy. So is your site GoDaddy hosted, and didn’t the slide show work for you, then try again with this new version. It should work. Let me know if it doesn’t!
Version 1.2.2 has no new functionality, so for more information about its use and the license I’ll just point you to the previous version.
Today I tried to install a WordPress plugin that was compatible with WP version 2.8, and I couldn’t get it activated. It said the module didn’t contain a valid header. After some searching and testing, I found that it had to do with the difference in version between my site (WP 2.8.4) and the ‘Tested up to’ version indicated in the readme.txt file of the plugin (WP 2.8). After changing the value in the readme.txt file to 2.8.4, it worked like a charm.
This is no problem when you install a plugin from the WordPress plugin library, using the automatic install functionality, because it warns you there might be a problem, and you can choose to install nevertheless. But when you download the plugin to your computer, and then do the installation from there, the problem may occur.
Of course, we’ll try to keep our widget always up-to-date with the latest WP releases, but if for some reason we are late, and you don’t want to wait, then this is an option.
So if you encounter this problem, first of all you should check on this site if there is a newer version of the widget. And if you have the latest version, then you should unzip it, check out the first lines of the readme.txt file, and if necessary change version on the ‘Tested up to’ line to the WP version you’re using.
Of course, it would mean using a widget that hasn’t been tested for that version of WP, so the risk is yours.
I’m writing this post thanks to the contribution in the support forum of a guest, Robone.
It’s something that many people have asked for, and until now I always had to tell them no. The slideshow is a widget, there is no plugin version, so it can’t be used in posts.
But now, thanks to Robone, this is going to change!
The process of using a widget in a post is a bit elaborate, but not complicated. And it really works great.
How does it work?
First, you have to install the widget, create an instance of it in the Widgets admin panel, set it up correctly and get it working.
Then, go to the html code of your website in your browser (right click on the browser window and choose the appropriate voice in the popup menu). Find the slideshow code and copy it. You have to copy everything from <object> to </object>.
Create a new post, write your story, go to the editor’s HTML view, and paste the code in. This is the code from the slideshow on this site.
Attention: if the slideshow doesn’t appear on the frontpage, but only when you go to the single post page (for example, clicking on the post title, or on ‘Leave a response’), it means that WP strips the object html tags from the excerpts. I resolved this problem installing the advanced excerpt plugin, and activating ‘No Custom Excerpts’ and ‘Don’t remove any markup’ in the plugin’s admin panel.
Once you’ve saved the post and checked if the slideshow shows, you can return to the Widgets admin panel, and move the widget into the ‘inactive widgets’ box. Doing so, it won’t show up in the widgets area of your template anymore, but it will continue to show in the post.
You can still make changes to the settings of the widget, and they will show in the post.
Attention: if you change height/width of the slideshow after you copied the code, you’ll have to adjust those values by hand in the post’s html code.
Good luck with this exiting new possibility. Any questions/problems are to be posted in the support forum. If you’ve got any suggestions or just want to tell me something, leave a reply.
